Real or Fake
This activity can be done at any age level – simply use materials that are age appropriate for the group. Show participants a real item and a similar, falsified item, and have them determine which is the real item. Discuss ways they can tell which item is fake – for example, does it come from an illegitimate news source? Is the source heavily biased? Is the source unclear? This can be done with many different materials, including:
– news stories, headlines
– viral images
– social media posts (for example, compare two TikToks about a current event)
Searching Workshop
This is especially good for teenagers hoping to go to postsecondary – show attendees the basics of searching, and how to avoid predatory journals or news sources.
